KroxFlow vs Frame.io: Why Production Teams Are Switching

A detailed comparison of KroxFlow Media OS and Frame.io — media review, AI generation, project management, and pricing. Which platform is right for your production team?

Frame.io changed how production teams review video. Before it, you were emailing ProRes files or sending Vimeo review links with no threading. Frame.io gave teams frame-accurate comments, version stacking, and client-facing review links that didn't require a login.

Then Adobe acquired it. The product is now part of Creative Cloud, pricing has changed, and smaller independent teams are looking for alternatives that don't require an Adobe subscription to unlock full functionality.

KroxFlow Media OS was built as that alternative — but the goal was never just to clone Frame.io. It's to replace the entire disconnected stack that production teams run: the review tool, the project manager, the AI generator, and the storyboard editor.

Here's the honest comparison.

Media Review

Frame.io gives you HLS adaptive streaming on upload, timecoded comments, version stacking, client review links with no account required, and approval workflows. It's excellent at its core job.

KroxFlow matches all of this: HLS adaptive streaming via Bunny Stream (auto-transcoded on upload), Fabric.js frame annotations drawn directly on paused frames, version stacking with tab comparison, client review links with no login, and approval status tracking from draft → in review → approved.

The difference: in KroxFlow, your review links sit inside the same project where your storyboard, your task list, and your invoices live. Context doesn't break when you hand off to a client.

Winner: Tie on core features. KroxFlow wins on integration context.

AI Generation

Frame.io has no AI generation tools. You export a frame, open Midjourney or RunwayML in a separate browser tab, generate, download, import back. Context is lost every time.

KroxFlow has Shot Generation Canvas — a React Flow node canvas where each storyboard shot gets its own AI pipeline. Pick your FAL.ai model (image, video, upscale), chain prompt enhancers, run, and the output is saved directly to the shot. 13 node types. Generation history per shot. Credits via Stripe, model selection per run.

Winner: KroxFlow, no contest. Frame.io has no equivalent.

Project Management

Frame.io is not a project management tool. It handles review workflows but has no tasks, no client CRM, no invoicing, no team assignments beyond reviewers.

KroxFlow has a full project management module: projects linked to clients, tasks with sequential numbering and stages, team assignments, approval tracking, and a billing module with invoices, quotations, and profitability tracking.

Winner: KroxFlow. Frame.io doesn't compete here.

Storyboarding

Frame.io has no storyboard tools.

KroxFlow has Storyline — a visual storyboard editor where each shot links directly to the Shot Generation Canvas. You storyboard a scene, generate reference visuals per shot with AI, then upload your cut to Media Review. The entire pre-production → production → review loop happens in one place.

Winner: KroxFlow.

Desktop App

Frame.io has a desktop app and Premiere Pro / After Effects panels built into Creative Cloud.

KroxFlow ships a native Windows and Mac app with a DaVinci Resolve bridge (sync storyboard shots and markers), Premiere Pro panel (sync cut list via localhost socket), and direct QNAP NAS access for teams running local storage. It does not require the full Creative Cloud suite.

Winner: Depends on your NLE. DaVinci Resolve users: KroxFlow. Premiere + After Effects teams: Frame.io has deeper Adobe integration.

Pricing

Frame.io is bundled with Adobe Creative Cloud ($54.99/mo all apps) or available as a standalone plan. Team pricing runs $35–$50/seat/month.

KroxFlow is currently free during beta. Pricing will be announced before general launch, with founding member discounts for waitlist users.

Winner: KroxFlow during beta. Pricing comparison pending general launch.
